Mario Hernandez
Founder & Executive Director, Learning How 2 Live
Mario Hernandez’s journey is one of resilience, redemption, and purpose. After experiencing the challenges of incarceration, Mario knew firsthand the barriers people face when trying to rebuild their lives. Instead of allowing his past to define him, he chose to transform it into a mission that inspires others.
With a vision rooted in faith, compassion, and second chances, Mario founded Learning How 2 Live to provide hope and practical support for those walking the same path he once did. Through mentorship, community outreach, and innovative programs like Thrift for a Purpose, Mario has built an organization that not only restores dignity but also creates real opportunities for employment, education, and personal growth.
Mario’s story is proof that change is possible. His leadership reminds us that every setback can be the beginning of a comeback, and that no one is beyond the reach of hope. Today, he stands as both a voice for the unheard and a living example of what it means to rebuild with purpose.
Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to walk alongside people as they move from hardship toward stability, purpose, and lasting change.
Our Vision
We envision a community where second chances are embraced and everyone has the opportunity to thrive. By breaking cycles of incarceration and poverty, we work to build stronger families and healthier communities. Our vision is a future where dignity is restored, opportunities are accessible, and hope is never out of reach.
What We Do
At its core, Learning How 2 Live helps people rebuild their lives after hardship. Many of the individuals we serve are transitioning from incarceration, homelessness, or difficult personal circumstances. We provide the tools and support they need to move forward with dignity, confidence, and purpose.
Our programs include:
Mentorship & Guidance – One-on-one support to help participants set goals, stay accountable, and gain encouragement.
Job Readiness Training – Resume workshops, interview prep, and skill development to prepare people for meaningful employment.
Life Skills Support – Helping individuals with budgeting, communication, time management, and personal development.
Community Connection – Linking participants with trusted partners, services, and resources for long-term stability.
Every step we take is aimed at breaking cycles of incarceration and poverty while building stronger, more resilient communities.
Thrift for a Purpose
Our Thrift for a Purpose store is more than just a shop — it’s a cornerstone of our mission. Located in Boise, the thrift store transforms community donations into funding for LH2L programs.
Here’s how it works:
Donations – Community members give gently used clothing, household goods, furniture, and more.
Affordable Shopping – Items are resold at low prices, making essentials accessible to families in need.
Funding Programs – Every purchase directly supports our mentorship, training, and outreach programs.
Volunteer Opportunities – The thrift store also serves as a place for volunteers to give back and for participants to gain work experience.
